There is more to a puppet production than one might think – it’s not as simple as putting a sock on one’s hand and sewing on two black buttons for eyes (although of course this can be lovely). To make an original Old Trout performance, there is a huge commitment of thought, time and talent.

Script creation
There are no scripts out there for puppet companies. All our shows have to be imagined, designed, visualized, mocked up, and written by us – it’s one of the things that makes us unique. Whether we’re adapting a classic like Pinocchio, or creating our own story, the script-writing process can begin years ahead of actual production.
Puppets
All the puppets are hand-made. We carve them out of wood or sculpt them from clay, and each one presents a tangle of engineering challenges; we are known for our technical innovation. A production will require dozens of different characters and each puppet takes approximately 50 hours to create – from conception to completion.
Costumes
Each puppet is carefully fitted with beautiful hand-made costumes. It takes many hours to dress one puppet, including design and production.
Set Design
Our sets are often characters unto themselves: they transform, both figuratively and literally, from forests to castles to whale bellies. Before the actual set can be built, a detailed miniature model is constructed to ensure all the ideas are feasible.
Props
There are dozens of props created to bring the puppets to life and inspire the audience’s imagination. Props can be as intricate as the puppets themselves.
Music
It wouldn’t be a complete Old Trout production without distinctive sound design and music. Our soundscapes are always original and we have used both recorded and live music. Many of the instruments used to perform will be as unique as the production itself.
